An Interview With Fábio Sasso
I recently had the pleasure of speaking with Fábio Sasso. He is a graphic designer, web-designer, and creator of the awesome design blog Abduzeedo (you might have heard of it). If you haven’t heard of Abduzeedo, you need to check it out. It’s an incredible resource for getting inspired and learning about design. In fact, Abduzeedo consistently acts as an inspiration for us at the Nonsense Society. Besides his business, Fábio is just a super nice guy. What strikes me about Fábio is that he never tried to make Abduzeedo a huge thing. It kinda just happened because he was doing what he loved. Everything he did you can do right now. Keep reading to find out how he created his own success.
Where did you start?
I started Abduzeedo here in Porto Alegre brazil, in the end of 2006. My office had been robbed and I had lost all my gear (laptop and 2 external hard drives for backup). The main idea of the blog was to use it to backup my experiments, because I had lost everything so the only successful way to back them up would be to do so online with the blog.
How long did it take for Abduzeedo to get popular/profitable?
Abduzeedo got some tutorials on diggs front-page in the beginning of 2007, then I started writing some tutorials for PSDTUTS which helped a lot to make Abduzeedo more popular. In terms of profitability the blog started to make some money in mid 2008, then I hired some writers to help me out with the blog.
How did you get so many readers to come to Abduzeedo?
Our idea is to share things that inspire us as designers and enthusiasts but also things we use on our real projects, so we post things we really like and I think that is what makes some posts popular because we’re sharing a bit of our creative process. Also the blog is open to anybody who wants to share their thoughts or inspiration.
Zee is Fabio’s web design company.
What have been the biggest difficulties?
We had some problems with hosting because the blog started growing too much a bit too fast. As I was the only one taking care of that I started getting quite crazy
Now Abduzeedo got a great and very reliable hosting (Mediatemple) and that allows us to focus on providing good content.
If you could go back in time, what would you have done differently?
I don’t know, maybe I would have taken more English lessons ehhee. English is my second language and sometimes I got a bit insecure.
When you start designing something how do you get inspired?
My creative process is very simple. First I have to know exactly what I have to do and for whom I will do it for, the target audience. Once I know that I start looking for inspiration, but always trying to find what will be inspiring and innovative for them and not for me. I think that is really important because most of the times I’m design for a totally different audience with different tastes so I cannot let my personal taste influence the outcome of my work.
